Our Programs

A look at the programs that El Puente offers within the community.

1

After-school Tutoring Program

We offer afterschool tutoring for first- and second-generation Latino children in 1st through 6th grade from local elementary schools during the regular school year. We have an Academic Coordinator that oversees the program, she assesses the children, makes observations, and guides tutors on what areas to work with each child. Our volunteer tutors come from all major colleges in the area, juniors, and seniors in some of our local high schools and community volunteers. Wright State University has worked with us for over ten years to hold a lab on site. It is a hands-on class with college students in IEP top tier classes during the Fall semester pursuing an education degree. Each college student works one on one with one of our children. They conduct an assessment and develop a curriculum to assist the child in overcoming academic challenges.

2

Parents Workshops

As part of the tutoring program, the parents of the children enrolled attend seminars and workshops to help and support their children’s growth and academic improvement. We provide classes to teach them how to create healthy routines at home, preparing a study area and structure to allow for continued growth at home. Speakers from different areas of services in the community are brought in to give presentations to the parents.

3

Food Donations

Local grocery stores, e.g., Kroger’s Marketplace in Beavercreek, have partnered with us to provide us with food donations once a week throughout the year. Many families have benefited from the generosity of Kroger’s. We notify members of our community via WhatsApp group chat when we have received donations and where to go to pick them up.

4

Coats for Kids Distribution

For the past few years, our kids and families have received free coats as part of the Coats for Kids campaign from WDTN and Catholic Social Services. This year we distributed more than 60 coats to kids in need from the community. We start making a list during the first two weeks of September each year. If you need a kid’s coat please text or leave a message at our number 937-701-7383, leave your name, child’s age, size and gender. We will try to obtain a coat for your child. We get the coats donation delivered the first week of November. If you want to donate new or lightly worn children’s or adult’s coats, please reach out to us. We only accept seasonal items.
